WHANGAREI GYMKHANA
TENTATIVE PROGRAMME PLANS. MANY ATTRACTIVE FEATURES. A meeting of the committee sot up in connection with the gymkhana which is to be held by the Whangarei A. and P. Society at Kensington Park ' on October 20 and 22, was held last night, Mr T. ,T. Griffin presiding. Tentative plans for the programme were dealt with, and the event promises to provide a large variety of attractive features for the entertainment of the public. It was reported that the Railway Department was very favourably disposed to run special trains from Auckland, and the Northern Steamship Company is to be interviewed in regard to' running a steamer. Proposals for the events on the pro,gramme were submitted by the representatives of the various sporting and other bodies on the committee. The Amateur Athletic. Club offered to provide a full programme and the Manngalapero Athletic Club a programme of money events. The Motor Cycle Sports Club indicated that it would provide a. number of events, including races, long .jumping, obstacle races and a novelty in the form of riding through a sheet of glass, if a suitable size of glass could be obtained. This event should create a ,great deal of Interest. Motor car events, including novelty items, will bo a feature of the programme. 'The Whangarei .Amateur Wrestling and Gymnasium Club agreed to stage a wrestling tournament, and there is a possibility that Auckland competitors will take part. In addition to the horse events, military events will be staged, including the ever popular wrestling on horseback, tent-pegging and V.C. race.
A suggestion was made for a procession of decorated vehicles from the town to the park, and it was decided to ask the Rotary Club Committee to take charge of this section. The cpicstion of sideshows was left in the hands of a sub-committee, comprising the secretary and Messrs W, .Tames and Draper. It was decided to ask the Waipu Caledonian Society to take charge of the Highland and national dancing section, and Mr D. L, Ross is to be asked to organise a pipe band contest. There is a possibility of bands from the Waikato coming to Whangarei. Prizes of £lO for the first and £5 for second, if there are more than three entries, were suggested for this event.
Chopping contests will ho another popular feature of the programme, and the Maungakaramea and Mangakahia Athletic Clubs will bo asked to take charge of this part of the programme.
ft was decided, on the motion of the chairman, that a programme committee, comprising the representatives of the various sections represented, draw up a definite programme and submit it to the committee for submission to the finance committee. The programmes are to be ready by April .10,
