THE PLAZA. VILLAINS IN COMEDY. “When thieves fall ' out —you'll usually find a' woman ini ’the background. If that is not quite the correct adage, it is. the theme of the new British laugh Hut, ■ " ‘Diamond Cut Diamond,” which opened a season at the Plaza Theatre last night..... Adolphe Menjou- and Claude Allister are partners in crime, and Benita Hume, is “the woman in the background. ” The story opens with. Meujou and Allister in the South Seas, penniless, hut ahvays- living in hopes. They steal a valuable pearl from a native, and on the proceeds go to London. Mysterious robberies occur and the two crooks live in great stylo. The trouble starts when Menjou accidentally ruiis into a detective and is saved from an. uncomfortable situation by hiding a-diamond necklace in a young lady’s handbag. Menjou later discovers ■ that the girl is also a crook, he begins to tread warily. However, the girl hoodwink him, and in a hilarious climax, she lias Menjou and Allister arrested and sent -to prison while she and her husband take a holiday to another country with a rather big loot. “Diamond Cut Diamond” is a -splendid British comedy, with amusing situations and clever dialogue that is guaranteed to entertain fully. Shots of London and subherbs will also stir the- memories of many.

' ' double programme. A well-balanced programme of comedy and drama provided patrons with good entertainment at the Ilogent last evening for the first of a two •nights' 5 showing. El Brendel, in "Olsen’s Big Moment,’ ’ is responsible for the humour, and, in the role of janitor of an apartment house, he is given ample scope and plenty of opportunities to supply the laughs. His duties as janitor bring him into contact with illassorted couples,and broken romances. In his endeavour to right matters, lie finds himself involved in a series of complications that lead him into trouble, but finally to happy endings. A more serious note is struck in "The Mad (fame,’’ a story embracing what might be called America’s mos menacing Spencer Tracy, who has .the-Tending role, pmtrays the part-of an ex-gangster, who is double-crossed by his associates and sentenced to a. term of imprisonment. During this time, his former asso•c’ates terrorise the country by kidnapping, and Tracy is released from prison to aid flic Government to wipe on the evil. His knowledge of the iriule>_ world gains him an entrance into ti.e ling of kidnappers, and the story moves with dramatic rapidity through the happenings behind the grit ring headlines of newspapers. This entertaining film, combined with comedy, will be shown for one more night at the Regent.
