BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS, SIGN POSTING PAGIUTI ES. The Whangarei .Borough Council met hist night, the Mayor, Mr W. .I ones, presiding.
The Whangarei Women’s Institute wrote ashing if the council would place a signpost on the corner of Hatea Street and Mail’ Street, with directions, to Mair Park. It was stated that residents in that neighbourhood had numbers of people inquiring the way. There was a sign on the other corner, but though people from the northern end of the town found Mair Street they were unable to locate the park' until directed. The council decided to grant the request. At a later stage of the meeting, on Cr. Morrish’s motion, it was decided to recommend the Parks Committee to erect suitable signs in the centre of the town, directing people to the various park areas.
Work For Ex-soldiers. The Empire Ex-Services’ Association wrote again asking the council to subsidise £SO, on a £1 for £1 basis, to provide assistance for ex-soldiers during “stand-down week.” The association was anxious that its rather limited funds should go as far as possible, and asked the council’s favourable consideration.' The work to be done would be, as before, at the discretion of the borough engineer. The request was granted, tho questions as to how the men were to be employed td bo referred to the Works Committee. Boys’ Band. Cr. Jounneanx referred to the Boys’ Band and the decision made to wind this organisation up. He moved that the council pay the outstanding debt of about £l2 15/, contingent on the band handing over its instruments to the council. The Mayor said that the instruments were worth practically nothing. An amendment by Cr. Holmes that the Mayor and the two council representatives on the Band Committee inquire into the matter and report, was carried.
Ragwort. Cr. James mentioned that a specimen of ragwort, supposed to have been taken from the abattoir property, was on display in Cameron Street. The matter was referred to the chairman of the Abattoir Committee.
1 Footpath. Cr. Morrish brought up the matter of a path between Otaika Road and Te Mai Road. He had received a letter from a resident desiring this, and this request was supported by the Hora Hora School Committee. Cr. Morrish said that very little work would bo required. The matter w r as referred to the Works Committee for 1 consideration.
