VICTORIA BRIDGE

QUESTION OF CLEARANCE. CRUISING CLUB REQUEST. The secretary of the Whangarei Cruising Club wrote to the Borough Council last night in reference to the proposed new Victoria Bridge. “Some few months ago/'’ the letter read, “I wrote you in reference to a resolution passed by the members o.f the above luiu about the height of the proposed new Victoria Bridge. I am sorry to say that I have mislaid tlic copy and. therefore I cannot quote the height that was mentioned then. At; a representative meeting held last Thursday evening to again discuss this question, there was a unanimous vote to ash your council to make the minimum height 10 feet above high spring tides. This height would ensure safe passage for all times. The height quoted in my last letter to you we would like to be rescinded. ’ ’

The Mayor said that the letter referred to by the Cruising Club dealt with the swing bridge, but could not be found. However, the club wanted more clearance, which would make the bridge' four feet six inches higher than at present. The Mayor thought that the letter might be received in the mean-

time until something was decided as to how the bridge was to be built, and where. Cr Jounneaux thought the subject should be kept well in view, otherwise it might be overlooked. It was moved that the matter be referred to the committee recently set up to meet the Public Works- Department to gather what information they could and to. work to see if plans and assistance could be obtained, and that the question of clearance be kept in view, a report to bo presented at the proper I time. i Cr Holmes said he was glad the matter had been brought up by people for whom the council had to provide facilities, and he moved an amendment that the letter be received and the engineer be instructed to consider the question of height when making his plans, but before any decision was reached a report be made to the council as to any additional cost. In many cases the question of height was left to the last minute, creating extra expense. The amendment was lost, however, and the motion was carried.
