COMPETITION TEAMS

■ SELECTION OF PLAYERS. CHANCE FOR JUNIOR MEMBERS. The question of outside competition matches and the selection of teams .to compote in these games was brought up at the annual meeting of the Kensington Bowling Club last night. Mr Curtis moved that no player be selected more than twice to play in competitions outside the club if other players were available. It was desirable, he said, that the interest in the club should be maintained, and players were liable to lose this if the same persons were selected year after year. It was only fair that all players should have the outside experience.

Mr Walder considered that such. a proposal would tie the selection committee down. The committee’s job was to choose the best team possible, and if a player were selected two or three times running it indicated that he was a consistent performer. The president commented that he could see Mr Curtis’ point of view, but the selection committee did its best to win trophies and picked the host teams. Possibly too much stress was placed on the winning of trophies. At, the same time, the selection committee had a. duty to pick a team and members should stand by their decision. He suggested, however, that it ■he a recommendation to the .committee that the selection be varied if pos : siblc. • /•

Mr Tibbits considered that the real trouble was that the'general committee had'challenged very little .in tlie last two years. If more challenges were submittted there would be more games for players. Last year only two outside, competitions were played, Mr Stringer thought that the solution would be either to give pp going after trophies, or to enter for them all. Then different ’ teams would .-bp. needed in each case and ,junior players would get games. He was satisfied, however, that the club should adhere to its grading more than it did. Mr Curtis, who said he did not blame the selectors, but contended that every player should have his chance .in .outside games, agreed to ; modify his motion, proposing that the selection committee be recommended not to select the same players for outside gabies more than twice in the season unless they thought it necessary. This motion was carried.
