Jimmy McLaruin, the Vancouver boxer who has just won the world’s welterweight' championship, was born in. Ireland about 27 years pgo, but his parents went to America while he was still a baby. After boxing as an amateur he became a professional in 1924. He was a bantamweight then. By 1928 he was a lightweight, and in that year he had a fight, with Sammy Mandell for the world’s lightweight championship, but Mandell . beat him on points. For the past fwo years he had been ranked variously second and thifd fampng the welterweights. Me • Larnin is the man who ; effectively stopped former lightweight champion Benny Leonard’s attempt to eoriie back to the ring. MeLarnin is described as a great little' fighter, undoubtedly the hardest hitter, weight for weight, in any class, but of late years he has fought but seldom, carrying to an extreme, for fighters below heavyweight the watchful, Waiting style of quest for a championship.
