The Whangarei County Council, by resolution today, confirmed the levying of the harbour rate, amounting to Jd in the £l. The commencement of the Tariff Commission’s sittings in Auckland on August 1 is notified in the “Gazette” of yesterday. The Japanese Government’s mercantile training ship Shiritoku Maru is expected to arrive at Auckland about August 10 and remain a week. "Regulations published in the “Gazette” last evening place a total prohibition on the importation of fruit into New Zealand from any country where Mediterranean or West Australian fruit fly is known to exist.
This morning Mr W. J. Dawson, president of the Rotary Club, received word that Mr and Mrs Albert Russell, the well-known community song leaders, are definitely coming to Whangarei on Tuesday, August 29th, to conduct under the auspices of the Rotary Club, a Community Sing” to raise funds for the unemployed. Application is to be made to the municipality for the free use of the Town Hall for the occasion. There was a. collision between a motor bus and a lorry on the Onerahi road this morning. No one was. hurt. The bus, one of the Northern Motor ■Company’s fleet, driven by Mr A. Wallace, was engaged in carrying children from the A warn a district to the public school, Whangarei. The lorry was driven by Mr Bignall, and the collision occurred about 8 o’clock at the first bridge on the Onerahi road. The bus was not much damaged, but the lorry was rather badly smashed.

It has been decided to increase tha height of the tower being erected at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Hamilton, to GG feet. A clock having four faces is to bo installed.
Owing to the large number of appeals scheduled to take place at the Whangarei sitting, which will open on Monday, the Kaitaia session of the Transport Appeal Board has been postponed until July 21. The date previously set down was July 10., The board will arrive in Whangarei tomorrow.
In a letter to the Whangarei County j Council today, the district engineer sug- I gested that where slips are occurring in the Wheki Valley, willow planting bo undertaken, and if springs exist above the slips that an attempt be made to divert the water. Cr J. H. Hayward said that the matter had already been attended to. An automobile association patrol recently inspected the route which provides direct access between Tokatoka and Buawai across to Mangapai and Oakleigh. It has recently been metalled and will shortly bo signposted by the Automobile? Association. The run-' ning surface on the new portion is reported to ho excellent. Appreciation of the services of the Northern patrol of the A.A. has been expressed by several motorists who were unfortunately delayed by the recent flooded state of’ the roads. At Whakapara, where the road was covered to a depth of three feet, the patrol assisted motorists in trouble and'placed flags and depth posts for the guidance of traffic as the flood receded.
The danger of farmers who had mortgages on their farms being victimised when prices rose was referred to at the annual conference of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, at Wellington, last night. A number of remits on the subject figured on the order paper, and a committee, consisting of Messrs W, .T. Poison, H. 0. Mellsop, W. W. Mulholland and F. Waite, was set- up ‘to go into the subject with a view to amending legislation being introduced next session of Parliament.
