DUBIOUS DEALINGS

TIN HARE SCANDAL INQUIRY

SWINDELL’S PARTICIPATION,

THOUSAND SHARES FOR HIMSELF.

ASSERTION BY WITNESS

(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received 0 a.m.) SYDNEY, August 4.

Mr Justice Halso Rogers, the Royal Commissioner appointed by the Stevens Government to investigate the allegations regarding tin hares and fruit machines, resumed the inquiry today. James McCarthy, bank clerk, gave evidence of his attempt to secure a license for greyhound racing at Wagga. He said that “Judge” Swindell advised him to form a company with ’>ooo shares, to which he agreed. Swindell also asked for 1000 shares for himself.

Witness said he composed the application for the license and Swindell added to it, and the letter was typed in Swindell’s office, Swindell repeated his request for 1000 shares, and witness told him he would not give him 1000 carraway seeds. Witness said lie had no intention of starting dog-racing. He merely wanted to sell laud for that purpose. Swindell had led him to believe he was getting shares from country coursing companies, which procured tin hare licenses.

John Hurley, n grazier in the AVagga district, said ho accompanied McCarthy when the latter visited Swindell, who wanted £IOOO or 1000 shares to ensure the issue of a tin hare license. Witness told him ho would have nothing to do with it. Ho “cleared out,’’ leaving McCarthy with Swindell.

The hearing was further adjourned
