SHOPPING WEEK
DATES IN AUGUST SELECTED. MEETING OF SHOPKEEPERS. A meeting in connection with the proposed Shopping Week was held in the ex-Y.M.C.A. buildings . last evening, Mr R. G. Hosking being elected to the chair and presiding over a moderate attendance. The committee appointed for the purpose of considering suitable dates for the Shopping Week reported that they had revised dates, and it had been decided that August would be the most suitable month, and they had selected August .11) to 24. On the motion of Air Hosking, it was decided that Shopping Week be held during that period.
In connection with the National Dairy Conference to be held in Whangarei in June, on the motion of Air Blansha'rd it was decided that the same committee wait on the Borough Council and urge that if possible the lighting system be installed for the visit of the conference delegates, and to recommend that outside labour be employed if the council’s electricity staff is unable to complete the work.
In connection with the same visit, it was decided that all shopkeepers be circularised, asking them to endeavour to brighten up their window displays to provide -an impressive array, ,
M.r K. G. M. Kelly moved that members of the committee wait upon the shopkeepers also, to make a personal appeal for their co-ordination in the brightening of their displays. The motion was carried, and' members appointed to make a canvass of various blocks of the town, and a report of their activities will be submitted to the next meeting. A letter was brought before the meeting from the British United Kingdom Manufacturing Association of New Zealand, suggesting that an Empire Shopping Week be held during Empire Day Week. The chairman said he thought something should be done, and it was decided that the association be notified that a Shopping Week was being held on the dates chosen in August, and that the matter would be kept before the committee, and an endeavour made to display Empire goods to advantage. It was also decided to ask for information as to the progress of the scheme.
It was reported that about 75 shopkeepers had notified their intention of participating in the community lighting scheme.
