THE FLOODED SHAFT. The process of de-watering the Hikurangi Coal Company’s workings is proceeding satisfactorily. The seven and six-inch pumps are still in action, discharging about 90,000 gallons per hour, and the water is going down at the rate of two feet per day, which the manager, Mr J. Makiuson, says k quite satisfactory under the circumstances. On Wednesday there was about 94 feet of water in the shaft. LEAGUE CONCERT. The concert in aid of the Rugby League, which met with such an enthusiastic reception a fortnight ago, was repeated at the Criterion Theatre on Monday. The singers wmre again in great voice, especial mention being due to Messrs Smith, Law'son and McIlroy. In spite of somewhat desperate conditions, owing to unemployment, the funds of the league were further augmented to the extent of about £B, and‘the producer, Mrs Sparks, must be congratulated on her fine effort.

HARVEST FESTIVAL,

The conclusion of the Presbyterian Church Harvest Festival, the funds from which were in aid of the Presbyterian Orphanages, was held in the Presbyterian Hall on Monday night. There was an enormous amount of fruit and produce of all kinds, wed displayed, which, when Dutch auctioned by Mr Geo. Cross, realised upwards of £l7. A very fine service was held on Sunday by the Minister, the Rev, T. H. Burton, the church being decor ated with seasonable fruit, flow'd it and produce. LODGE AFFAIRS. The regular meeting of Court Hikurangi, A.0.F., w r as held on Tuesday evening, under the presidency of C.R. Bro, G. Lawson. The usual lodge business w T as conducted and two new’ members w'efC initiated. A report of the picnic to Manganese Point w r as submitted, showing a pro fit on the undertaking. It was decided to hold a social on Easter Tuesday and to invite members of all sister

i bulges and ill oil* lady friends. The officers of the lodge were elected a I social committee, together with the j secretary, Bro. A. Sankey. j I Bro. J. B. Ryan was elected auditor for the lodge. : j The lodge howling competition was advanced another stage when Harris, 1 Oossill, Cox and Sankey (skip) dc-j feated Lawson, Ryan, Ansell and Smith (skip), 14 —5.

PERSONAL. Mr Ball, of the Bank of N.S.W., Hawcra, is visiting his parents in Park Street. Mr S. J. Wood, manager of the Dairy Company, returned on Friday from a visit to Auckland. Little Miss Marjorie Cunuold was taken to the Whangarei District Hospital on Wednesday suffering from ..carlot fever. Mrs W. J. Power, wife of the re-lieving-stationmaster, has arrived from Auckland and is staying at the Hikurngi Hotel. Mr Mawhinnoy, manager of the Kaitaia Dairy Company, and his wife are the guests of Mr and Mrs S. J. Wood.
