MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. CONTRACTS LET. (Special to “Nonthcru Advocate”) At the last meeting of the Otama;ea County Council, Mr R. Coates presided and important matters pertainng to road works were dealt with. TENDERS. Mareretu--Maungaturoto Road.—For quarrying 668 c. yards of metal the tender of Spick and Evans, £250 10s, ,vaß. accepted. For the approaches to the Franklin Bridge, three tenders were received rad left with the councillor for the riding and the engineer to deal with. Two tenders were received for quarrying and crushing 797 c. yards of metal for Kaiwaka—Mahpawai section of the main highway and the councillor concerned and the engineer were authorised to deal with same. Maunga/turoto Station —Waipu Road, quarrying and hauling 250 yards of limestone. The tender of F. Judd was accepted. Mutton Chop Bridge Approaches.— Supply of 994 yards of metal. —Tender of Bourne and Hill accepted. Maintenance, metal, 150 yards, Waipu—Maungaturoto Road, tender of Hammond , Bros, successful. Spawls for Mutton Chop Bridge.— Hammond Bros.’ tender accepted. W. Smith is to cut 30 chains of tea tree oh the Greenhill Road to a width of 66 feet. GENERAL WORKS. In connection with the formation of the Outlet Road at Skinner’s Hukatere, it was resolved to adhere to the original line of road and construct Mot ol- Bridge on the old site. The estimated cost of formation, culverting and fencing Kirk’s Deviation was set down at £362 and of this amount the settlers concerned have agreed to contribute £3OO in cash. —A letter of thanks is to be sent to the 'settlers. On the Browns —Tara, Road, the Gov eminent grant of £3OO is to be ex pended so as to include the construe tion of two bridges, one of a 50f1 span and one of 20£t. It was reported that the deviaitior from Henry’s Bridge towards Manga wai had been laid off and the levels in connection with the townslii] drainage scheme at Mangawai takei for a distance of -about 60 chains. GOVENIMENT GRANTS. Plans and specifications have beei prepared for the expenditure of tin following ‘ Public Works grants:— Bull’s Road, Marcretu, £4QO; Raupo— Naumai, £481; Westlake’s Road, £O9 Parahi Road, £123; Burch’s to Waive re, £136; K-aiwaka Settlement Road £99; Bryndetwyn Road, £150; Onerir Road, £300; Rord Road, £100; Paharef to W-aikiekie, £llO. SCHOOLS CENTRALISATION. Concerning the question of the cen tralisation of schools at Ruawai which the council had opposed on ac count of the dangers of the extra bu: traffic in the conveyance of cliildrei destroying the roads, the Board oi Education wrote stating that they die not intend taking any further aetioi as it is outside- its province to decid< whether the roads are suitable or not RUAWAI ROADS. It was decided that on Cr. Hunt’s return from Wellington, where he in ■tended going to interview the Gov onimont with regard to further assis fiance for the Ruawai roads, he w-ouh hold a meeting, to which the counci agreed to send representatives. This will be about the end of next week Considerable friction has arisen bo tween the Ruawai ratepayers and Cr Hunt over this matter. DESTRUCTION OF BEACHES. The action of the harbouraster ii prohibiting the further removal oi shell from the P-ahi foreshore was commended in view of the need t( conserve one of the finest and mos! popular beaches on the harbour.
