A message from Hastings states that Donald Stewart, aged 73, who came from Dunedin three months ago, died suddenly while being driven in. a motor car this morning. An inquest is deemed unnecessary. The president of the 'Winter Show Committee today welcomed Mr Trigg as a new member of the executive. He also welcomed Mr Nelson upon his return from Australia. In acknowledgment, Air Nelson expressed a hope that his experiences would be of value to the society. A benefit social will be held in the Y.M.C.A. Hall on Monday evening un-, der the auspices or the Methodist Ladies’ Guild. There will be an excellent musical programme to which the, Municipal Choir and Mrs S. C. Blanshard will contribute, and supper will be provided. Detail prices of butter at Auckland, have been increased another penny, to Is lOd a pound for first grade and Is 9d for second grade. This is the third increase of Id since September 4. The final of the Napier ladies’ golf championship was played yesterday in perfect conditions and resulted in victory for Miss Upham (Miramar), who defeated Miss Watson (Palmerston North), 3up and Ito play. ~ Prior to the school holidays, Convent and High School A teams were equal in the lead in the Whangarei Basketball Cup competition. They had met on two occasions and each had defeated the other. In the deciding round, which began on Wednesday, Convent beat High School C by 10 —3, and Whangarei A defeated Horn Hora by 22—7. Yesterday, Convent, after a strenuous game, beat High Sehool B by 16 —5. The final between High Sehool A and Convent will be decided on the Whangarei School courts next Saturday afternoon, when the cup will be presented to the winning school. Yesterday afternoon pupils of the Hora Hora Sehool held a cross-country race, the course being from the sehool along Te Alai, Otaika and Raumanga roads, crossing the Raumanga Stream at Higginson’s Pool, then through Mr Higginson’s property to Hospital and Maunu roads, and back to the schoolground. The greatest handicap allowed was 4min, but the lad who set oft’ then was overtaken by Douglas North, who started a minute later. North , continued in the lead, winning by about 100 yards from Sinclair Edmonds, scratch, who gained fastest time. In the senior division, Con Beeston, scr., was third, and Ivan Conway, 15sec behind scratch, fourth. During their sojourn at Okaihau, the carpenters who left Whangarei to erect cottages at the Public Works settlement entertained the people of the district to a musical evening and dance. The fallowing items were rendered: Alcssrs .1. Rive, violin and cornet solo; R. Brown, euphonium solo; W. Griffen, Irish jig and step dance; X Watson, sword dance; S. Oldeorn, recitation and song; X McKinnon, songs, Mr C. Taylor, late of Whangarei, acted as accompanist, and ATr W. Dudding was Alaster of Ceremonies. The evening was a very enjoyable one, and a request was made for a repetition of the programme on a future occasion.

The entertainment to be staged at the Y.M.C.A. on Friday evening promises to be most attractive. The children's choir of over 60 voices, under the baton of Mr E.’ R. Fairburn, and with steel guitar accompaniment, will render several concerted and a few individual items. There will also be a display of parallel-bar work by the junior gymnasium class, and horizon-tal-bar work by the senior class as well as some tumbling and pyramid work. A feature of the programme will be the items of the male quartette comprising Messrs A. Marsden Woods, F. Horne, W. A. Cole and E, Tobin# The concluding item will be a humorous sketch entitled “Packing,” by popular local artists.

Attention of the executive Of the Whangarei A. and P. Society was drawn this morning by Mr W. J. Bell to the fact that a number of classes for children, for which no entrance fee had been charged in the past, had been excluded from the schedule for the forthcoming Spring Show. He considered that children under 14 years should be encouraged to exhibit and that some classes shuold be free. The secretary, Mr C. P. Butler, explained that the change had come about by adoption of the Winter Show schedule for indoor exhibits in place of , the Spring Show one, and the former had never included free classes. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Crawford, that the entry fee of sixpence be deleted from ten classes for children exhibitors.

The handsome championship shield of the Whangarei Cricket Association is now on view in Mr R. G-. Hosking’s window, Cameron Street. The trophy is a fine piece of workmanship, carried out in mottled puriri, with figurework and miniature shields in heavy silver. The inscriptions show that Hikurangi has been easily the most successful team in the competition having gained championship honours upon six occasions, three of which were pre-war. Upon resuming in 191920, Maraden was the victorious team, and also earned premiership in the following season. The town club A. team also won the competition last year, when 10 teams were engaged. The only other teams to win the championship were Onerahi in 192425, and Maungakaramea the following season. Fresh miniatures will have to be added prior to the coming season. This week is the Fourth Anniversary of the opening of Messrs D. Meikle & Co.’s Drapery Business in Whangarei, and the firm will be cffering Special “Anniversary Prices” all this week in celebration.
