WHANGAREI HARBOUR BOARD

YESTERDAY ’8 DELIBERATIONS. The Whangarei Harbour Board met yesterday, the chairman, Mr J. A. Fiulayson, presiding ovc(r au {attendance of the following members: — Messrs J. D, McKenzie, E. Swann, Jas. D. McKenzie, J. E. Holmes, R. 6. Hosking and L. A. Johnson. Mr W. M. Eraser, engineer-secretary, was also present. HOEY’S BRIDGE. The question arose of re-erection of the footbridge across the Waiarohia River leading from the lower end of Oameron Street to Messrs Hoey Bros’ Okara property, the bridge having been washed away during a flood, after being fouled by a barge. ■iAs shingle could be unloaded from the barges below the bridge site, the engineer thought that if Messrs Hoey wished •to re-erect the bridge the board might raise no objection. . The chairman had interviewed the Mayor upon the subject, and Mr Brake had been opposed to consenting to the building of the .bridge. He had referred to the probability of a road being taken to Kioreroa, but it might be some -years before the expenditure of about £BOOO required would be undertaken there, and the road near the railway station might;be used for some time as giving means of access to Kicrcroa, Mr Holmes moved that the board maintain its attitude against consenting to re-erection of the bridge. The onus was upon the Borough Council to provide Messrs Hoey with access. The council had voted £3, and thereby had shown that it accepted the position. When seconding the (motion, M;r Johnson said: ■ that if Messrs Hoey took it upon themselves to put up the bridge, it would have nothing to do with the board. The motion was then carried. LOAN MONEY INVESTMENT. A letter was received from the Public Trustee stating that the board's investment of £13,000 had been renewed for a further two years at 5 per cent., the right being retained by the board to break the term on giving one month’s notice. The terms were accepted, on the motion of Mr Swann. RATE ON SAND AND. SHINGLE. ' Opposition to the payment of a harbour improvement rate on shingle and sand taken from the board’s outports was expressed by J. J. Craig, Ltd,, which firm was referring the matter to the Marine Department. ; Mr Hosking considered that if the board left it to the firm to go, to Wellington they would get something in the way of concession,' and he thought the chairman should be authorised to go into the matter with the departmental authorities when he went to* Wellington. The 'speaker had always maintained that it was a wrong thing that one firm should have a monopoly. Further consideration was deferred to be dealt with in committee with other matters to be isubmitted to Wellington.
