SKIN-DEEP BEAUTY.
A HOME-MADE TOILET VINEGAR It is no use attempting to look attractive if the skin is not in good condition. Women are apt to regard the question of their skin too superficially. They spend a lifetime hunting for a perfect powder which will adhere all day, 'because their faces get "so shiny.” If they regard the matter more thoroughly they would realise that the trouble is that the skin is too oily. It does not get shiny, but actually is shiny all the time, except when it is newly coated with powder. The only effective method is to cure the greasy condition of the skin so that a flick of powder will keep it looking attractive all day. For this purpose it is necessary to avoid soap for the face as much as possible, since all soap is more or less oily or fatty. An astringent is required to seal the excessive activity of the pores of the skin. The following vinegar is excellent and can be made cheaply at hom«. Shred the rind of a large lemon into a stone jar, and add a pint of white vinegar. Weigh an ounce of lavender tips and put them in the jar. Cover tightly and allow to steep for twenty-four hours. Set the jar in a saucepan of boiling water, and allow the water to simmer gently for about an hour. Strain the mixture through muslin into a bottle and cork it tightly. A few drops of this lavender vinegar should be added once a day to the washing water, and it will not fail to correct the oily tendency of the skin. Women whose skins are naturally greasy should always use it, and should avoid rubbing the face vigorously as the friction opens the pores. Such skins should be treated very gently with a soft flannel, whereas a drier skin is freshened and invigorated with a fairly rough skin-glove.
