Visitors from the South Island during the past few days express astonishment ait the difference in the landscape of the respective islands. In the South the country presents a burnt, up appearance, being dry and . parched.. The grass is deficient in succulence, fires being prevalent. In the North Island, however, the country is clad in verdant green, indicating the presence of ample feed. Southern farmers have long desired rain, but if it came now it would bo too late to materially affect the cereal yields, which, it is stated, will ■'o light compared with last year’s returns.
