MAUNGAKARAMEA

VALEDICTORY FUNCTION, The many friends and well-wishers of Mr W. G. MeKinlay and family assembled in force,,at the hall on Monday night last, the occasion being a farewell social On the eve of their departure from the district. The McKinlays have been resident in our district for some 12 years, and the well-filled hall was eloquent token of the esteem in which they are held. The floor was crowded with dancers, who thoroughly enjoyed themselves, the music, voluntarily supplied by the Tauraroa Band and local players, being much appreciated. During the evening solos were sung by Mrs Gibson and Mr Yarr. After a bountiful supper had been handed round, Mr P. McKenna, referred to the many good qualities of the guests of the evening, after which Miss Walker, on behalf of the Ladies' Hockey Club, presented Miss MeKinlay with a bedroom clock. Mr W. H. Gillingham, after referring briefly to the good work of Mr MeKinlay tend family, on behalf of the residents of Maungakaramea and surrounding districts, presented them with a handsome clock, suitably inscribed,, as a slight token of esteem, and wished them every happiness in their new home. Mr MeKinlay spoke feelingly in reply, thanking the people for all their kindness during the 12 years they had been in the district, and extending a hearty welcome to their new home at Woodville. Three hearty cheers wer then given and “They are Jolly Good Fellows" was sung, followed by the singing of “Auld Lang Syne." CLEARING BALE. The sale of Mr MeKinlay's herd, etc., took place on Tuesday last, when the prices realised ■were very satisfactory, considering the time of year. ROAD MATTERS. The roads of the district arc now in good order, and "with a certain amount of patching should stand well during the winter. The road to Otuhi has been graded throughout its length and is now quite lit for motor traffic, which fact will doubtless be appreciated by those who wish to journey to Maungatapere, and vice versa.
