The Wnihi-Taurauga section of the East Coast railway will be completed in March, 1927. There will _ then be direct railway connection ' between Auckland and Tancatua, Bay of Plenty.

Members of the executive of the Whangarei A. and P. Society are reminded of the meeting which is to be held in the society’s premises, Walton Street at 10 o’clock tomorrow morning to consider the balance sheet and to receive the report for the year. It is hoped that there will be a full attendance of the executive.

The Ngatiawa, of Auckland, which arrived at the Whangarei Town Wharf at 11.30 a.m. today, is quite a large boat to negotiate the river. She'has a tonnage of 220, and her cargo consists mainly of 3500 cases of benzine. This is her second trip to Whangarei. Her departure is timed for 10 o’clock tomorrow morning.

The following will constitute the Marsden cricket team to play Onerahi on the latter’s ground on Saturday: —Meredith (captain), East, Teesdale, Jennings, A. Martin, Boggs, Alf. Yesterday Mr Allen Bell, M.P., for the Bay of Islands, went to Riponui, where he met the settlers and discussed reading requirements with them. Opinion is divided between the settlers, some being in favour of raising a loan to metal the HikurangiJordan road, and others favouring the money being expended on metalling the road, via Ruatangata, which gives the more direct connection with Whangarei. The member advised them to reach an agreement on the point, because the district’s finances would not stand two outlets being metalled. When they had decided which road they want he would get the money for them.

In a will of 110 words, Mr. Scrimgeour, of London, who floated most of New Zealand loans, left £357,406 to his wife. Mr S. L. P. Free, S.M., of Masterton, has been granted 12 months’ leave of absence, and will leave with Mrs Free early next month on a tour of the world. Mr Free will be relieved by Mr. A. Mowlom, of New Plymouth. Good progress has been made with the erection of saleyards on an extensive scale about half a mile distant from Waibtira railway station for Messrs Alfred Buckland and Sons, Ltd., and the work is approaching completion.

This morning the Mayor, Mr J. E, Holmes, the acting engineer, Mr J. Archer, and Cr A. M. Rust made a visit of inspection of the new roadway under construction between Walton Street at the Triangle and the Whangarei railway station.

The Ministerial party "was met upon arrival at the Whangarei station yesterday afternoon by Mr W. Jones, M.P., Mr J. E. Holmes, Mayor of Whangarei, and Mr Allen Bell, M.P., for the Bay of Islands, through which electorate a nine days’ tour of inspection is to be made. Eighteen hundred Christchurch people are waiting to be connected with the telephone, and 400 of them must wait 18 months yet. This state of affairs was disclosed by enquiry at the Telegraph Office. The Department can never catch up -with the demand, 1 they say.
