VIENNA, Dec. 1

The workers carricd out a mass demonstration against the lack of. food. Several thousand marched to the Parliamentary Buildings and attempted to force* an entry, but were repelled by the police.

Afterwards a deputation wag. received by the Prime Minister and .the Finance Minister. The workers demanded a cessation of the importation of luxuries and State provision of children's food. The Finance Minister promised to tax the rich to meet the demand. The workers struck and rioted later. They pillaged the restaurants and a number of shops in which were stocked luxurious furs. They seized, robbed and assaulted svell-dresaed men in the streets. The police were powerless and ■the troops were absent in West Hungary. The mob rioted until it was exhausted. The pillagings in the city included, the Bristol Hotel, where English and American guests sought refuge in Sir W. Goode's room. The plunderers broke open the room, rifled the boxes, j stole -the whole of Sir W. Goode's | clothes and threw a .telephone and a slipper at him, though Iboth missiles missed. The mob also raided two banks, smashing windows and furniture. They stopped tramcars and forced the betterclass passengers to hand over their furs and overcoats. —A. and N.Z.
