Dear Valeric, — Mrs. Thorne gave a very enjoyabl-3 bridge evening at her residence, Main's Avenue, last week, Mrs. Day winning the first prize for ladies and Mr. Evans the gentleman's prize, whilo the consolation prizes went to Mrs. Evans and Mr. Brainsby. Miss Bo McKinstry has returned fxom a holiday visit to England. Mrs. Mackia spent a few days during the week visiting her sons at Dargaville. Mrs. Nutsford gave a delightful coni-ing-of-agc party for her daughter, la.st Saturday, the young people having a happy time with music and games while their elders played bridge. Mrs. Frank Farmer, who has just recovered from a serious illness, has gone to Auckland with her mother, Mrs. Carson.

STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE.

Here is the recipe I promised you last week. * Cream half a cup of butter, two cups of sugar, and four eggs, 'add three cups of flour and one good teaspoonfu! of baking powder. Bake in sandwich tins. For a iilling—mash the strawberries with sugar, and when the cake is cool cover one half with the mashed strawberries, cover with whipped cream, and then the other half of the cake. Stewed strawberries are also delicious with junket or baked custard, and for the .syrup—bring to the boil water and sugar in quantities of one breakfast cup to one tablespoon, and set on cool part of oven with lid off to stew when the strawberries are put in.

{Yours, 'NINON'
