SINN FEIN VIOLENCE.
TRAIN DERAILED. AMBUSCADE SHOOTINGS. (Received 11.20 a-m.) LONDON, April 23. Bands of armed men in Cork surrounded 50 patrol officials and secured the entire city's correspondence, which was removed in vans. A military forage party was ambushed at Clegheen, Tipperary. One soldier was killed. Inspector Potter of the Constabulary, who ran into an ambush, i s miss ing. His car was found riddled by bullets. Harris, a Protestant farmer near ißallinmore, was dragged from his bed and taken away. His body was found later with the skull battered and labelled "Spy and informer." iSinn Feincrs tore up the Great Northern line at Glaslough and derailed a heavily laden goods train from Belfast. The raiders set fire to the waggons, 45 being destroyed.— A. and N-Z. ROSARY RECITAL. -CARDINAL BOURNE'-S INJUNCTION - (Received 11.35 a.m.) LONDON, April 23. A letter has been issued by Cardinal Bourne to the Roman Catholic Bishops.of England charging Roman Catholics to recite the Rosary in the churches continuously where possible, that a true, just and lasting understanding may be established in Ireland between England and Ireland.— Reuter.
UNDERMINING GOVERNMENT. ENFORCING RATES DIVERSION. (Received 11.40 a-m.) LONDON, April 23. , Recent systematic attempts by the Sinn Peinerg to overthrow the local government, administration in Ireland are shown by documents captured by the Crown forces- It appears that 14 rebel inspectors were appointed to visit local government bodies and try to induce them to col. lect rates for the Sinn Fein instead of the Government, but they met with no success. An order was then issued Dast Februalry instructing the Republican Army brigade commanders to harass and boycott certain classes of loyal officials. In some cases rate money was extorted from ratepayers fDy armed and masked men. County Council protests only evoked rebukes from the ,Sinn Fein headquarters, who emphasised that opposition to enemy regulations was a predominant consideration, even though some county councils suffered a financial breakdown.—Reuter.
