Shipping: Arrivals and departures 'during the week: —Alert, Wsiikonini, Dandy and Portland, scows, for the Northern Coal Company.
Wo have had glorious weather, for the past week. The sun is gaining power, the days are getting longer, the roads are drying up and all the beauties of spring are bursting forth.
The fine weather enabled the contractors (Williams amd Norton) to reship their hauling engine on to another barge and tow it over to Patnua. The landing of it there was a rather tough job, as there was a considerable swell on the beach. Twice the tow ropes parted and the barge was with difficulty kept off the rocks. A stage of logs had to be made, so that the engine could be run down on to the beach, but many habnds and much manipulation landed it safely, and all concerned rejoiced, although wet to the skin. The steam tug Tui towed the barge over and MiHarris stood by with his launch to render assistance. Mr Morey and family have left to take up their residence in Whangarei. Miss White and her mother have left for Auckland. The new teacher, Mr Blakewell, commenced his school duties on Monday and has taken up his residence in the house vacated by Miss White. Mr Hambliii, a returned soldier, has gone back to Auckland after spending a pleasant time in Ngunguru. Mr V. Owens was here for a couple of days on business and left again on Wednesday. Mrs H. Clemeiuts went to Whangarei on Tuesday. Mr B. Wellington has started taking the farmers' cream up to Kiripaka in his launch. Mr Clark has returned and taken up Iris old position as captain of the Tui.
