CHARGED AGAINST AUTHORITIES. (Received 8 a.m.) SYDNEY, Aug. 26. With tho return of Mr Bryant, late director-of Soldiers' Settlements, who was recalled from London, a Royal Commission has commenced an inquiry into the administration under Mr Bryant. * The evidence so far taken indicates alleged maladministration of funds under a certain bonus system and in other directions. One witness gave evidence that, acting under Mr Bryant's instructions, he supervised repairs to the residence of Mr Ashford, then Minister of Lands, of which department soldiers' settlements is a branch. The repairs cost £750.—A. and N.Z.
