HOCKEY.

SUCCESSFUL SEASON ENDED

When the hockey enthusiasts of the Whangarei district began the season which closed with the matches decided on Thursday, the prospects of carrying the gam e on successfully were by no means bright, but several staunch enthusiasts, chief of whom were the untiring President. Mr J. H. Hodgson, and Mr George Larking, Were undaunted in their effort to promote the game and to them must be conceded *n a larg e measure the sound position attained by the sport in both Whangarei and district, They wer c ably assisted by some live members of country Clubs and by such enthusiasts as Messrs H. Monkhouse, A. Thomas. A Chissell, and W. N. Jack, by whose combined effort the men's competition was got under way. The ladies had many keen enthusiasts in their ranks and, assisted by the male members of the Hockey Association, they were equally successful in surmounting th c seeming difficulties which faced them and the ladies competitions were launched with little doubt of 'th e satisfactory issue. The winning of the White Horse Shield by the men's represntative team and the good showing by the ladies in Auckland, combined with the fact that no less than five Whang arei district ladies secured inclusion in the Auckland Provincial team to play against Poverty Bay at Gisborne next week, clearly indicates the high standard which has been attained by the leading exponents in the district. Those results alone should be a gratifying compensation to Messrs Hodgson, Larking and the other promoters for their battle against odds earlier in the year, and should also be a guarantee that next season the game will begin with a lot of keen adherents and every chance of prosperity.
