UNIVERSAL HALF-HOLIDAY.
THE SATURDAY SUGGESTION. UNSUITED TO WHANGAREI. IN MR MANDER'S OPINION. (Special Correspondent.) WELLINGTON. This Day. Mr F. Man dor, member for Marsden, was a member of a deputation which waited on the Minister of Labour yesterday asking for tho adoption, among other things, of the universal Saturday half-holiday. This was the special reason for Mr Mander's presence. It happened that on the half-holiday question he could not agree with all that was urged by the other members. They all said that Saturday, was the proper clay for the half-holiday in all places, and that in those places where there was opposition to the scheme the adoption of the Saturday closing idea would immediately dispel any of the old opposition.
Mr Mander thought that it would not be so. in Whangarei. He said that in his town many of the business people were not in favour of Saturday closing. It was the special day for visiting the town and the bulk of the business was done on that day. Many of the farmers might be able to do their business on other days of the week, but this would never be the case of the country workers. They could not leave their work on any other day, and it was the only day on which they could come into Whangarei to make their occasional purchases. He was therefore opposed in the meantime to the universal Saturday half-holiday, although he thought that Saturday '.losing might quite well bo applied in the cities.
