Prices in th e old days of Wellington, said Mr F. P. Wilson, while speaking at a meeting of the historical section of the Philosophical Society at Wellington, were not abnormally high, for the New Zealand Land Company imported the goods and sold them at quite reasonable rates. Some of the charges made were: Rum, 8s per gallon; gin, 7s per gallon, case gin, 4 gallons, £1 1; brandy first quality, 17s per gallon; ale and porter, £1 per dozen; sherry, per dozen, £1 ss; sugar, Mauritius, £2 5s per cwt; refined loaf sugar, Is Id per lb; tobacco, Negrohead, 2s per lb; cigars, Manila, £5 per 1000; salt (Liverpool), £9 per ton (about Id per lb); Yorkshire hams, Is Id per lb; Irish butter, Is 6d per lb; pota-
toes (New Zealand), £8 per ton; cheese (Cheshire), Is 3d per lb; pickles, assorted, £1 2s per dozen quarts; beef, fresh, carcase, per lb, Is; mutton, Is per lb; pork Is per lb; flour, £40 per ton; milk, 3d per pint; planks, 16s per 100 ft. Mechanics received £1 16s per week, and labourers £1 Bs.
