In the tease of Christina iSaville (previously reported in the "Advocate"), the woman who was found wandering albout at Thorndon with her two young children, she was ©har-ged at ithe WeV.ingrt/m Magistrate's Court with having insufficient lawful visible means of support. The evidence showed that the woman haJ Ibeen suffering from great mental distress. She came from New Plj;• mouth aibout a month ago in the hope of getting work, ibut with two youngj children—one ,an infant in arms—the handicap "was too great. Mr Page, S.M., said he would not enter a conviction, but he advised the accused to stay with the Salivation Army, iwhich would look after her until she was alble to get work. The two children had been sent to a receiving home.
That which is stated to be the first case in Queensland heard under thj •Profiteering A«t of 1920, came before the Police Court at Maryborough, when the Comimissioner of Prices proceeded against Denhams, Limited, (Maryborough, charging them with having committed a breach of the Act, in that they sold a quantity of sugar at the rate of 4 23-i2Bd per lb, such price being higher than the declared price, namely 3id. The defendant firm pleaded guilty. Mr •Moreton stated the breach had occurred through the albsenee of information, the proclamation with reference to the price fixed having ibeen published in the Government "Gazette" and Brisbane "Press" on Saturday, March 27th, but not in the local Press It was on that day that the sugar hud been sold. The police magistrate imposed a fine of £100.
