NORTHERN ADVOCATE DAILY With which is incorporated the NORTHERN MAIL DAILY.

THURSDAY, JANUARY 22, 1920. RISING PRICES.

Registered for transmission through the post as a newspaper.

The prospects ahead of family men in keeping pace with household expenditure arc certainly not encouraging. j Each day appears to bring along an announcement of an increase in prices and the problem of the cost of living becomes a difficult one to solve. One of, the latest predictions is made by a gentleman well versed in the movements of trade that tea prices will continue to •'aviate" until very soon they will reach an almost prohibitive level, as far as the general consumer is concerned. He bases his assumption on the ground that the wholesale price for tea in Canada at the present time h. 4s per lb. In th course of a very short time, he said, the price locally will have advanced on that sum by at least Is and will go as high as 6s. The alteration jin the control of the butter market lso j justifies the conviction thai there will | also bo a speedy rise in the cost of that commodity. It is anticipated that the market price will touch from 4s to 6s in Britain. Such prices must, naturally affect our export trade and we must assuredly expect a corresponding rise here unless Government takes steps by means of the equalisation fund to control the local market. Even so, experts anticipate' that tho price will lie at least two shillings r.er lb. A short time ago there was also disquieting information indicating that the price of a suit of clothes in London would soon touch the £-0 level, and those men who have had interviews with tailors in this country can readily believe the statement accurate. In fact, whatever way the family man turns he is confronted by an increased expenditure. Businessmen are revising their lists each day and the household bill goes up accordingly. On top of this we have the assurance of a Wellington magistrate that the soVereign to-day is not worth more than 10s
