ALLIED CLIMB-DOWN.
OVER RUSSIAN POLICY,
(Received 10.10 a.m.)
LONDON, Jan. 19,
The English newspapers are puzzled over the latest developments in the Russian situation. Some surmise that the sudden change in the Government schemes is perhaps because Mr Churchill favoured a vigorous campaign against the Bolsheviks, but was overruled at the last moment by Mr Lloyd George.
The official communication on Thursday regarding Europe certainly did not prepare the public for the present climbing down by the Allies. Much doubt, exists whether it will be possible to trade with Russia without Lenin and Trotsky intercepting the goods.—A. and N.Z.
