THE MEAT PURCHASE.
WILL IT BE CONTINUED,
MR MASSEY NEGOTIATING,
WELLINGTON, This Day,
The Prime Minister is still in communication with the Imperial authorities on the question of the, extension of the meat purchase contract. He expects to have a definite reply within a day or two. The position of the matter at present is that Mr Massey has asked the Imperial Government whether they are willing to buy New Zealand frozen meat for another season. If they refuse then nothing more can be done; if they should be willing to purchase then, as before, it is for the New Zealand exporters of meat to say whether they will agree to an extension of the requisition or whether they prefer to take risk of an open market and the attendant risk of shipping. But until the reply has been received from the Imperial Government it will be useless for New Zealand producers and exporters to discuss the question. Mr Massey has already stated that the indications are that the Imperial Government will not take our meat for a further term.—Press Assn.
