THE HOUSING SCHEME.
MANY APPLICATIONS FOR
LOANS
Many applications for loans under the Housing Act of last session have reached the Government from local bodies and other applications are pending. It is apparent that the amount of money applied for by the local bodies is going to be far in excess in the aggregate of the funds made available under the Act, and the allocation of the money will be a matter for Cabinet consideration. In the meantime no large loans have been authorised.
The Act provides that the Government may spend up to £1,000,000 pn its own housing schemes, advance up to £250,000 a year to emplpyers for housing purposes, and may raise an additional sum of £1,000,000 under the loan s to local foodies scheme for expenditure on housing. This million will not cover the applications that are coming to hand from local bodies. The Christchurch City Council, for example, has applied for £200,000, and other local bodies wish to enter upon very large schemes. It is the intention of the Government to proceed with the scheme to the full extent of the authorities conferred by Parliament, fout Ministers cannot go beyond the Act.
