'FLU INFECTION.

THE DOMINION TALLY

CASES ON THE PATEENA

WELLINGTON, Jan. 7

Three members of the crew of the Pateena developed influnza on the way across from Nelson and Picton, and on the arrival of the vessel this morning they were removed to the hospital. Their names are Russell, Hancock, and Bairncross. The hospital authorities state that their condition is not serious. The Pateena is being thoroughly fumigated, and will not be able to leave for Picton and Nelson to-day or Friday. The Moeraki was sent t 0 Picton only to-day and an endeavour will be made to send the Mapourika to Picton and Nelson on Friday.

The watersiders have refused to work the Pateena.

A total of 21 cases of influenza, and 11 cases of pneumonia, were reported in the Wellington health district during the week ended January 5.

Dr. R. H. Makgill, acting-chief health officer, stated to-day that the Dominion returns for the past fortnight showed a diminution in the number of cases of influenza and pneumonia. During the week ended December 22, 248 cases of influenza were notified throughout the Dominion, whereas in the week ended January 5 there were only 107 notifications. Regarding pneumonia j 43 cases were notified during the week ended December 22, and 25 case s in the week ended January 5.

The greatest diminution in influenza was shown in Auckland, where the number of cases in the week ended December 22 was 224, while only 78 cases were reported in the week ended January 5. In Canterbury there has been a marked decrase also. During the week ended December 22, 20 cases of influenza and 10 cases of pneumonia were notified, and only five cases of influenza, and five cases of pneumonia during the week ended January 5.

Every year for a long time a number of pneumonia cases following influenza had arisen, added Dr Makgill, and the existence of such cases was of very little significance indeed. There was every reason to be satisfied with the present position and there was nothing to suggest any alarm whatever.
