A BIG BLAZE.
IN AUCKLAND TIMBER YARD. '%
SERIOUS DAMAGE DONE
AUCKLAND, This Day.
Yesterday afternoon a serious fire swept through the timber mill of Messrs Castimore Bros., situated in Heme Bay Auckland. The fire appears to have started near the base of the breakdown saw, about 1 p.m., just as the men were resuming work, and catching the oily fluff and dust, the flames rapidly rushed up to the roof, and in a very short c w^e mill was ablaze. A two-inch pipe was laid on at the mill for fire-fighting purposes, but the water was short, and all attempts to use the service were practically useless. The fir e brigades summoned were in the sam» predicament. Water was scarce, and as the tide was low it was impossible to use pumps. The result was *ket the mill was totally destroyed, with a large quantity of timber, the loss approximately running into between. £7000 and £9000. The stable, joinery and box factories were considered to be out of danger by 3 p.ta._ Forty mill hands will be thrown ojttt of work.
