"THREE R's" NOT SUFFICIENT.
Speaking to the annual break-up of the Wellington Training School, the principal (Mr J. S. Tennant) said that this year" there had been a record number of students. Touching the suggestion of Departmental control of the school, he said that if the Wellington Education Board continued to treat the institution as it had done in the past he would prefer to remain a servant of that board. There were hopes of their being able to accommodate at least all the women students in the hostels next year. As to the question of reconstruction, whether it was material or spiritual, it was essential that the schools should play their part. What was the school going to do to teach what freedom really meant? If they were going to rest content to teach the "three R's" they would play no part, but if it was desired to participate in teaching freedom and responsibility according to the new lights there would have to be big changes in the methods of approaching these subI jects.
