NORTHERN ADVOCATE DAILY With which is incorporated the NORTHERN MAIL DAILY.

WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 24, 1919. VICTORY WAR LOAN.

Registered for transmission through

the post as a newspaper.

If this is to be true to name and spirit there must be a bigger response than has yet been made. In the financial statement published to-day indications are given of enormous sums being required for soldiers' pensions, repatriation loans, general assistance to disable soldiers, etc., and it is evident that the State funds must be greatly augmented if the work is to achieve its maximum good. It is probable that the need for prompt subscription is not fully realised, and that the appeal made known through the newspapers and otherwise has not been felt as a personal matter. There can be no doubt that he who can and does assist with his money (for which it should be remembered he is paid a fair interest) is rendering a national service. Perhaps the point to be emphasised is that provision is made for practically all classes to assist. An amount as low as thirteen shillings for a war certificate can be subscribed, and there is, of course, facility for those with large sums to assist in stabilising the finances of the country. A reminder is given in the press throughout the country that money can be realised on life policies, and that loans can be obtained from tho individual's banker. $uite properly, should such be necessary, the money may be compulsorily secured but the temper of the British people is all in the direction of playing the game, whether the task to be undertaken is the shouldering of a rifle or the subscription of a loan. To-morrow is the last day fixed, and we make no apology for reminding our readers of tho country's need, and their golden opportunity to assist with money or securities. But action must be prompt.
