STEEL STRIKE.
CONFLICTING COMPUTATIONS,
UNION FIGURES DISPUTED
, INSURANCE INCREASE
(Received 8 a.m.) NEW YORK, Sept. 22. At Pittsburg, Secretary Foster, of the Steel Workers' Union, asserted that 279,100 workers struck on the first day.
The employers assert that less than a third of this number walked out.
The insurance companies estimate that, owing to rioting, the insurance rates in some steel districts have trebled.—A. and N.Z.
It was announced at a meeting of the Wellington Education Board that the cost of building had advanced to such an extent that it pointed to profiteering in tho building trade. The board proposed to erect teachers' residences at Woodvillc and Pahiatua. Tenders were called for, and the only one received was at £1300. The cost of building similar residences in 1913 ranged from £427 to £450. The board did not accept the tender.
