RETURNED SOLDIERS' RECEP TION.
J A most enthusiastic and largely attended social gathering assembled in the Maungatapere public hall on the evening of the 19th inst, to welcome home the latest returned men from active service, and the unqualified success of the brilliant function abundantly testified to the able and hearty manner in which the residents of Maunu had so warmly co-operated under the organisation of a splendid working committee to show their esteem and appreciation of the men who had so ably done, their part for King and Country. The hall presented a most tasteful and attractive appearance with its fine display of many flags and charming decorations of greenery and flowers throughout. The main building, stage and supper room —in which was provided a bounteous supper sufficient for double the three hundred guests who sat down to it. Too much praise cannot be accorded the willing workers who so well provided and supervised its excellent arrangement. During the evening the dancing was intermixed with several vocal selections ably rendered by the Maungatapere Glee Club which were heartily enjoyed by all prosent. Previous to supper, the guests of the evening (comprising Colonel and Mrs McCarrol, Lieut. R. and Mrs Feaver, Pte. C. W. Brent, Troopers A. J. Matthews, P. Carter, M. Cleary, H. Gunson, F. Elliot, A. Kehoe, and A. Young were seated on the stage, when Mr Hayward, on behalf of the Maunu residents, wanuly tendered them the good wishes and congratulations of their many friends on their safe return to home and kindred. Mr Walker also spoke in a similar strain. On behalf of the guests of honour Colonel McCarrol feelingly acknowledged the appreciation, and expressed gladness at once again boing released from hardships and enablod to live as free men in so pleasant a country. The speaker gave a graphic account of the sands of Egypt, and the scorching heats of the Jordan valley. The large assemblage then heartily rendered "For They are Jolly Good Fellows,'' followed by ringing cheers for the assembled heroes of the happy occasion,'
