LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The Rev. Williams, Anglican missionary among the Maoris, has been touring the district and the North generally, and passed through Whangarei to-day on fois way to Hamilton, which is his headquarters.

A meeting of the Whangarei branch N.Z. Educational Institute is called by advertisement for 1.30 p.m. on Saturday next. As the business is of a most important nature it is hoped all teachers will make an effort to attend.

It is evident tiiat the Whangarei Beautifying Society does not propose to merely talk. The actual digging operations of this afternoon, and the offers of five public seats, indicate a linn intention to make manifest the many dreams of beautification.

A small but enthusiastic meeting was held last night in the supperroom of the Town Hall, of the Whangarei Beautifying Society. Most encouraging reports were presented, and plans were made for a vigorous beautification policy. Full details will be published to-morrow. Arrangements were made for a workingbee at the Triangle this afternoon, to dig up the plots according to plan. Mr Sandford was busy this morning imarking out the garden beds.

Local and district residents will sympathise deeply with Mr and Mrs F. Cubitt, of Waikiekie, in the sad loss sustained by the demise of their youngest son, Phillip Ryall, at the age of s_. The child had suffered from the serious ailment of enlarged spleen, and on his removal exactly five weeks ago to the Whangarei Hospital, it was plain that no hope of recovery could be entertained. The end, nevertheless, was unexpectedly sudden, a change taking place at 6.30 last night, with a fatal termination three hours later. Everything- ws done for the little patient at the hospital within the bounds of medical skill and nursing, but unfortunately without avail.
