THE CATTLE ROUTE.
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—Kindly allow me a little space re : the jprpposed icaittle roujte. In my opinion it would toe far better to take th e route round by Mr Jone.i' property, by. the railway crossing on Kamo road, by Bain's corner, and thence down the Whangarei River on either side. Shift the cattle yards, either by compensation or under the Public Works Act to a convenient spot on Parua Bay. road. My reason 3 for shiftng both sale yards are that they are a grave danger to the children attending the Hora Hora school. Personally I have seen wild bulls being driven by half a dozen cattle drovers up and down the road; they must be an awful nuisance to the patients in the Whangarei Hospital. Again, the freezing works are down the Parua Bay road, and it means that all fat stock from the north now do the return trip to the saleyards. Again, property in Kauika road is worth (or I should .ay valued at) £450 an acre; along the Mill road only £250 (T. H. Steadmen's property, vide rate book).
You mention in your leading article about wire-pulling. In my humble opinion as a ratepayer, in those representing the ratepayers we have got the poorest collection of representatives of any town of its in New Zealand. Most of the paltforms of the Borough Council are cut and dried under Dando's verandah, and the rest of councillors have not got enough stomach in them to voice their opinions for or against. The same may apply to the leading would-be's of the town. You see the same faces, hear the same old speeches—"King and Country," "Good Cause," "Push the Town Ahead," etc., etc. The only thing I can see they push ahead are themselves, — I am, etc.,
G. J. LAMARE.
