COW TESTING.

ASSOCIATION FORMED.

HIKURANGI DAIRY CO

On Saturday last, at the Dairy Company's meeting at Hikuratigi, Mr S. McKenzie gave an address on Cow Testing. This, sai<| the speaker, had been going on in New Zealand for 10 years, and last year the number tested was 17,000, while considerably over 20,000 were promised for 1920. He had been unable to obtain the average production per cow for Hikurangi. Taking the number of suppliers and butter-fat supplied he found that the average amount of fat sent in by eaoh supplier, was only 18031bs, which at 1/6 per pound equalled £135 4s. For the 1917 season the average was 23221b5, equalling £174; for 1916, 26801b5, equalling £196. The average yield of one farmer's herd supplying the Kaupokonui Co-op Dairy Factory Co., Ltd., for the year 1917-18 was 304.431b5. Eight years ago the same farmer's herd averaged 1701bs fat per cow. The increase in eight years had been 134.431bs per cow. Mr McKenzie held that there was room for tremendous increases in this district. One supplier to the Hikurangi factory had kept records and showed the following averages per cow:—l9l2----13, 931bs; 1913-14, 1591b5; 1914-15, 1311bs; 1915-16, 2471b5; 1916-17, 2681b5; 1917-18, 2751b5; 1918-19, 2161b5. - , . Mr McKenzie said there were good cows of every breed, but there was only one way of picking them out, and that was by testing. He then showed the box used for carrying the samples. The testing was done each month, and the results sent out to the supplier. The average productions per cow for the different provinces were as follows: —Auckland 160, Wellington 138, Canterbury 127, Otago 108, Taranaki 188. Mr Christie was strongly in favour of starting an association here. When selling, a man could then give a record of his cows' yield. Without testing a man was working in the dark. He moved:—• "That the Hikurangi Dairy Company start a Cow-Testing Association." This was seconded by Mr Thomas and carried, only one voice dissenting. M r Mclnnes moved a hearty vote of thanks to Mr McKenzie for his instructive address.—Carried by ac-
