HIKURANGI TOWN BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING

The usual monthly meeting of the Hikurangi Town Board Commissioners was held last Tuesday, .present: Commissioners T. Shore (chairman), R. C. Cherrie, K. Macßeth, F. Mcbeth, and Ed. Swarm. INCREASING RATES. The Huntly Town Board wrote ■pointing out the necessity for a higher rate limit of amounts chargeable for general rates and sanitary fees in the town districts, as the 'present rates were insufficient to carry out the works in the town district. It was suggested that the general rate be increased to twopence in the £ on the capital value and to thirty shillings per pan for sanitary service. It was resolved to refer the matter to the conference of the Municipal Association to deal with. STORM-WATER NUISANCE. Mr H. Madley called attention to a nuisance causing damage to footpaths and gardens in Valley Road by the overflow of flood and drainage waters from property owned by Mr Gilbey. It was resolved to request Mr Gilbey to abate the nuisance by construction of a suitable drain to carry away the waters referred to. BAND CONTRIBUTION. The secretary of the Hikurangi Brass Band wrote for the board's promised contribution towards repairing the band instruments. It was .;.,-...! :nat the eontribu--tion be paid and that Commissioner Swarm ibe appointed the Town Board's representative on the Band Committee. MUNICIPAL CONFERENCE. The secretary of the Municipal Association of New Zealand wrote asking the board to appoint a delegate to represent the town district at the ensuing conference to be held in Wellington during the current year. 'On the motion of Commissioner Swarm, seconded by the chairman, it was resolved that the town clerk be appointed to represent the board at such conference and that he be authorised to attend to several matters connected with the board's finances and also the closing of certain old roads. WATER SERVICE WANTED. Mr E. Gilbey applied to have the town water supply laid on to his house at Waro. It was resolved that the request be granted, the works to be carried out by a plumper to the satisfaction of the works engineer. GENERAL CLEAN-UP. The Public Health Department w ote asking if the board had a district, .as it was desirable thaf a sysspecal clean-up week within the town tematic clean-up should be carried out in every town. It was resolved to inform the department that the board favoured such a course and that such work would be carried out during the month of October. REMOVAL OF METAL. A discussion took place regarding unauthorised persons removing metal from the board's quarry. It was decided to take steps to prevent the removal of metal except by those authorised to do so. UNHABITABLE HOUSE. Mrs M. A. Gilbey notified the board that she intended to pull down an occupied house at the lime works at Waro, as it was no longer fit for habitation. She desired to have the wa*er service connection removed and her name struck off the rate book. It was resolved to offer no objection to such a course. RAILWAY STATION ENTRANCE. Correspondence was received from the board's engineer and the district engineer of railways regarding the need of improvements to the railway station entrance in George street. It was resolved to ask the department to remove the existing fence and replace it with a new one, painted white, with a suitable turnstile and entrance gate. MAIN ROAD GRANT. The board's engineer reported that the board's application for a vote for completing the northern portion of the main road had been forwarded to the Public Works Department. He suggested that application be supported by a petition from the residents of the town. It was resolved that members of the board take it in turn to secure signatures to a petition. SANITATION CONTRACT. The board's contractor for the sanitary service applied to transfer his contract to Mr J. Edwards, or allow him an increase in the amount of his contract for the carrying on the service to the end of his term. It was resolved not to entertain the proposal of a transfer nor to increase the amount payable in terms of the contract, owing to the non-compli-ance with terms of contract. WATERWORKS RESERVE. It was resolved that applications be invited for a caretaker for the waterworks reserve. NOXIOUS WEEDS. ■ On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Commissioner F. Mcßeth, it was resolved that the Government noxious weeds inspector's attention be drawn to the spread of gorse an.l other noxious weeds on public and private properties within the town district and that he be asked to take action. STRAY CATTLE NUISANCE. It was resolved that police attention be called to the danger which the public is subject to by three bulls being permitted to be at large on the streets of the town. STREET ENTRANCE CROSSINGS. It was agreed that owners who have not proper crossings to the entrance of their properties be asked to construct the same in terms of the board's by-laws. PEACE CELEBRATIONS. On the motion of Commissioner Swarm, seconded by the chairman, it was resolved that the thanks of the board be accorded to Commissioner Cherrie for the efficient manner in wMeh he carried out the duties of chairman of the Peace Celebration Committee. It was also resolved, on the motion of Commissioner &. Mcßeth and Commissioner Cherrie, that Mr Burley be cordially thanked for carrying out the secretarial duties connected therewith. GERMANS NOT WANTED. On the motion of Commissioner Swarm, seconded by Commissioner Cherrie, it was resolved that the board enter its protest against the proposal to reinstate Professor yon Zeydliiz to the Chair of Modern Languages at Victoria College, Wel : lington. LAND FOR RETURNED SOLDIERS It was resolved that the board re- j new its application to the Lands Department for a portion of the Hikurangi Swamp as a settlement for returned soldiers; that copies of the board's application be forwarded to the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward. Messrs Mander and Reed, M.P.'s; and the Whangarei and Auckland Returned Soldiers' Associations. ESTIMATES AND RATES. The treasurer submitted the annual estimates of receipts and expenditure and also the amount of rates required to be struck for current year, which were adopted. ACCOUNTS. On the motion of Commissioner K. Mcßeth, it was resolved that accounts amounting to £335 18s7d be passed for payment, including the expenditure in connection with peace celebrations in Hikurangi and Matapouri, on condition that the various accounts are certified by the chairman and secretary of the Peace Celebrations Committee.
