RAMPANT RETURNED MEN. THE PREMIER ASSAULTED. (Received 12.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. ; A crowd of two thousand returned soldiers and sailors marched to the Premier's office and demanded the release of the returned men arrested during the peace disturbances. The Premier attempted to address the crowd, which was augumented by large numbers of civilians, but was refused a hearing. From this moment all semblance of order vanished, the crowd rushing the Treasury and wrecking the rooms. One of the larrikin element entered the Premier's room and hurled an inkwell al Mr Lawson, inflicting a severe wound in the head. Several soldiers then carried the Premier to safety. At this point a strong body of police arrived and were met with a volley of stones. They charged and dispersed the rioters. Later a crowd of s,ix thousand marched to the Russell Street police station and demanded the release of the arrested rioters. The mounted police, after being bombarded with brickbats, chai-ged, and after freely using their batons dispersed the mob. Fourteen rioters and one policeman were injured. One arrest was made. The Premier recovered sufficiently to attend a special meeting of the Federal Cabinet at which the position was discussed. At the City Court a number of Saturday's rioters were fined. —A. and N.Z..
