BOXING.

PROPOSED REVIVAL,

WHANGAREI AMATEUR AS-

SOCIATION

The meeung convened lor the purpose of discussing- Uie reorganisation of the Boxing Association was very well attended last night. The chair was occupied by Mr D. W. Jack and considerable interest was taken in the proceedings. The secretary, Mr K. G. M. Kelly, presented a report as follows:— In July, 1914, the above association was formed, Mr Mander, M.P., being elected patron with Mr D. W. Jack as president. A committee consisting of 12 members and a secretary and treasurer were appointed to govern the association. Suitable rules were drawn up, and the association duly affiliated with the Northern Boxing Association. Premises were obtained under Mr Wilkinson's basement and a gym was equipped. The services of Mr D. Murphy were obtained and boxitig classes formed at Maungakaramea and Whangarei. Efforts were also made to establish a class at Hikurangi.

Altogether about 40 active members were enrolled and classes were 1 carried on successfully from July to early in December when Mr Murphy's term expired. Classes were also established at the Whangarei school and were carried on most successfully. The High School Board of Governors were also approached, "but owing to Mr Murphy's term having expired nothing eventuated.

Unfortunately the association was no sooner established when the great war broke out, md most of our active members answered the call and enlisted. The committee of the association met for the last time in April, 1915, and it was moved by Mr Hempton, and-seconded by Mr Jack, "That the active work of the association be held over until the executive consider it opportune time to revive the movement." This was put to the committee and carried, and the association duly went into recess.

* Altogether about 25 of the active members enlisted and we regret to say that some of them will not return, having made the supreme sacrifice. The association may justly feel proud of such a fine record, over 50 per cent, of the active members having answered the call. The balance being ineligible.

Now that peace has been signed and numbers of our boys have returned, the executive are of the opinion that the movement should be revived and activities again resumed.

The financial position of the association is as follows:—Punchingball, stand and floor, valued £3; flooring for ring, £5; total, £8. The boxing gloves (four sets) are practically useless, having perished, and the ropes for the ring have been stolen. The liabilities are practically nill.

The committee at the time of going into recess were as follows:—Patron, F. Mander; president, D, W. Jack; vice-presidents, L. W. Nelson, Rev. Patullo; secretary, K. Kelly";, treasurer, F. McGovern; committee, E. A. Simmons, R. G. Hosking, W. Maurer, H. C. Rishworth, L. Cooper, D. J. Frazer; auditor, J. S. Richardson; executive committee, H. Bray, R. G. Hosking, L. Cooper, A. D. Jack, A. McGregor.

Having given a brief review of the association, it now rests with the meeting whether the association be revived or remain in recess until a more opportune time.

The report was signed for and on behalf of the executive committee by R. G. Hosking, L. Cooper, K. G. M. Kelly and D. W. Jack. REVIVED. Mr L. Nelson moved that the association be revived. He considered that the time was opportune to reorganise. The sport was a healthy one and would be of considerable benefit to many of the young fellows. Mr W. Abbott seconded. He pointed out that on the way home from the front the boys on the transports made boxing a favourite pastime. The motion was carried uannimously. NEW MEMBERS.
