NEW BOOKS.
"Th e Mud Larks Again".; Lieut. Crosbie* Gartin ("Patlander"); An-t-;us and Robertson, Sydney. From ;'. W. Reed, Whangarei.
Books, with the war theatre as a setting, hav e naturally become very numerous of late years. The hero uf modern times has become as firmly fixed in khaki as th e gallants of Dumas were in doublet and hose ? or Scott's knights in shining armour. Some of these stories have been good, ethers bad—so bad that they would never pass muster but for th c glamour of the war. The little book by Lieut. Crosbie is well worth reading. It is rich with humour from trench and camp, and has the merit of being delightfully free from the coarse vein which so often turns to vulgarity. He has evidently com e through the great ordeal with his faculty for the enjoyment of life unimpaired, and his book will be read with genuine pleasure by soldier and civilian alike. Ib is a welcome contribution to the lighter literature of the war period.
