TERRIBLE MUTILATION.
DYING MAN DESIRES CIGARETTE
TAIHAPE, Nov. 9
The accident occurred, at 6.20 a.m. The exact situation is«Hx mile and ahalf north of Mataroa. The enginedriver and fireman were unhurt. The injured have been brought into Taihape. One mail agent, with his head terribly smashed, was found dead on the top of the telescoped mail van. Another mail agent was thrown among the wheels and horribly crushed. An elderly man had his left thigh broken and his right foot almost severed. He died on the way to Taihape. When told by the doctor that he could not live he imperturbably replied: "Give me a cigarette, doctor." with the lighted cigarette he passed away. The deceased has not yet been identified. Among the seriously injured several had broken limbs and ribs, and one has injured lungs. There are only five serious cases, but many minor injuries. In addition to those whose names were wired from Wellington Michael Kendall was found hurt and wandering in a delirious state and was sent to the hospital.—Press Assn.
