"KIA ORA."
LIEUT.-COLONEL MACKESY DEPARTS.
Since his return to Whangarei a few days ago, the movements of Lieut.-Col. Mackesy have been meteoric in their swiftness. His departure by the boat train to-day, en route for Wellington, must have come as a surprise to most people; nevertheless, a large crowd of friends was on the station platform to get a parting hand-shake.
Asked for a farewell message for the people of Whangarei Lieut.-Col. Mackesy replied—"Thank the folks for their exceeding kindness; nobody could possibly have been kinder to me than people here have been. The way they have treated me "will be a great encouragement to the boys at the front."
As the train moved out, "Three cheers for Colonel Mackesy ,, were called for and given with the greatest heartiness, followed by "Three cheers for the boys." And so, with shouts of "Good-bye," "Kia Ora," Whangarei bade farewell to the Lieut.-Colonel, who is returning in excellent trim to '' finish his job."
