LATE LORD KITCHENER.
"IN MEMORIAM" VERSES
On Monday evening, June 5, 1916, off the Orkney Isles, in stormy weather, Lord Kitchener and all his official escort were lost, the cruiser In which they were sailing (en route to Russia) being sunk by a "mine." At the time of his death Lord Kitchener was at the zenith of his fame, and the foremost man in the Empire. Not on the battlefield he fell, in tumult of the fray, Twas where the mighty ocean rolls in storm-tossed spray. God willed it so —perchance his work on earth was done. The web he wove is closing fast on Buligar, Turk, and Hun. Mourn Egypt's dark-skinned hosts, and bow your heads awhile For him who gave you liberty at 'Khartum on the Nile. Where'er the flag of freedom waves, in air, on .land, or sea, Soldier, and man he ever lives, upon the screen of memory. No glittering casket wraps his mortal form; His pall the eternal sea, his requiem chant the storm. His monument shall be "great deeds well done, The oppressor vanquished, and freedom won," Still round those rock-girt isles the Northern .lights shall flash, The rainbow signal storms, the echoing thunders crash. Such will it be till Earth's last page is read, The "Angel of Life" appears, and the sea gives up its dead. Alfred Carter, Whangarei, June, 1917.
