VALEDICTORY

FAREWELL TO MR. M. H. HUTCHINSON. A very large and representative gathering of members of the A. and P. Association and business people assembled in the County Council Chambers on 'Saturday afternoon for the purpose of presenting Mr. M. H Hutchinson with a token of the esteem in which he is held. The Mayor (Mr. T. H. Steadman) occupied the chair and explained that Mr. Hutchinson had been in the district for over thirty years, and during that time had done his utmost to advance the A. and P. show. His farm was looked upon as the finest in the district. On behalf of those present he handed Mr. Hutchinson a travelling rug and also a hand-bag for Mrs. Hutchinson. Mr. A. McLeod, (president of the A. and P. Society, referred to the assistance given to the society by Mr. Hutchinson while he (Mr. Hutchinson) .was president of the (society. He thought Mr. Hutchinson had been in the district for over forty years. M;r. Wm. Carter, an ex-president of the A. and P. Society, spoke of Mr. Hutchinson's good qualities as a settler. He made eulogistic reference to the goodi work done by their guest. Mr.' C Hawken also spoke. Mr. Hutchinson thanked those present for their presentations. He valued the articles on account of the spirit irf which they were given, and not for their intrinsic value. He looked upon England as much as a home as he did. New Zealand, to which place he hoped to return at Christmas. Those present at the gathering were his Worship the Mayor (Mr. Steadman), and Councillors Dent, Mann, Holmes, Jackson, Harrison; Mr. A. MacLeod (president), and Mr. J. Finlayson (vice-president) of the A. and P. Society; the chairman and members of the Harbour Board; Messrs. A. L. Hempton (Bank New Zealand), L. W. Nelson (Auckland Farmers' Union), J. N. Dalston (Northern Steam Ship Company), C. J. McCormick (Bank of Australasia), A. A. Wilson (Wilson and Wilson), C. J. Leversedge (Bank New South Wales), W. E. R. Moody (Hikurangi Coal Company), A. Sobie (Whangarei Dairy Company), J. T. Stone (Government Stock Inspector), F. Foot (Whangarei Engineering Company), Drs. Good, Baxter, Hall; J. R. Reyburn (Northern Coal Company), W. Wakelin (F. and W. Wakelin); also Messrs. Bain and Christian, E. O. Weaver, J. Wilkinson, H. Weaver, Dixon, McKinnon, Purdie, C. McKinnon, Hemphill, Fraser, G. ( Marshall, D. W. Jack, W. Pearson, R. Hill, W. Carter, C. Hawken, W. Cutforth, W. Lily, J. Andre, Phillips, R. Y. Kernohan, Carruth, Kirker, and others.
