THE KOWHAI MISHAP.
SERIOUS DAMAGE CAUSED.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
DUNEDIN, March 12
The Kowhai's mishap was more serious than at first supposed. While getting out past the mole at 8.30 this morning she appeared to get out of control. As she entered the swirl of the waters caused by the meeting of the ebb tide and a heavy incoming sea, she was driven right across the mole. Serious damage was so obvious that she was turned for the harbor leaking in the engine room. The fires went out off pilot beach, but the captain succeeded in beaching her near the week end pleasure resort. At 11 a.m. the engine room was full of water, and there were eighteen inches of water over the deck at the stern. The cargo, of about 110 tons, is dry, and a hulk has been sent to salvage it..
