CATHOLICS AND EDUCATION.
EPISCOPAL PASTORAL.
RECOGNITION DEMANDED,
AUCKLAND, Feb. 23
Bishop Cleary has issued a pastoral to be read at Roman Catholic churches on Sunday.
It says: "We demand a just proportion of the taxation we ourselves pay for secular education on the results our schools achieve, as testified by State inspectors. Our demand is identical in principle with the State system for the reform of inebriates and by the Salvation Army. Catholics only ask that the State shall certify to Ihe'work of education which they conscientiously do, according to State requirements. We at least require neither State patronage nor State pay for our religious dogmas."
