LOCAL AND GENERAL.
New regulations gazetted on the 16th inst. alter slightly the dates in connection with the District Electors' List, and the attention of the public is drawn to an explanatory advertisement in this issue. Mr Piggott, at present In charge of the Anglican Church at Maungakaramea, will take up his duties in a similar capacity at Te Kuiti next month. He will be ordained to holy orders by the "Bishop of Waiapu on the 23rd of April. Lieut-Coionei Steadman held a meeting at Hikurangi last night in connection with the new Defence Act. About forty young men handed in their names as members of a corps to be formed at Hikurangi. It is estimated that the full complement of 120 men will be available in Hikurangi. Mr Vernon Reed, M.P., will speak at Kohukohu in reply to Mr Massey to-morrow night. Mr Reed is travelling the Bay of Islands electorate, and "n succession will speak at Kaeo, Mangonui. Kaitaia, Hprekino. Kohuj>ohu, Okaihau, Kawakawa, and Whaikmara. He will then proceed via Whangarei to Auckland to be present at the Prima Minister's departure from New Zealand to attend the Coronation. On view in Mr C. H. Chissell's show rooms/in Cameron-street is a handsome bicycle. The machhfe is of the latest i pattern B.S.A. type, and the tyres, handles and seat are of world-renoun-ed makes. Experienced tradesmen, who are responsible for the building of the machine, are employed on the wages system, instead of piecework as is usual, thereby ensuring the thorough execution of each part of the fittings. In appearance the bicycle is a splendid machine, the enamelling and transfers of both the makers' and the agent's names being artistically and excellently done. Among ' the appointments recommended by the Teachers' Selection Committee' for authorisation by the Auckland Education Board are the following:—Mr F. J. Mullins, teacher of Tangiteroria school; Mr A., Mabbett, teacher of Tangihua Nos. 1 and 2 half<ime schools; Miss O. C. Foster, assistant at Whakapara school. The 'allowing probationers are recommended Mr S. C. Carter and Miss V. BedKamo school; Miss Leila M. 'lardy, Hora Hora school. Since the ••revious meeting of the Board Miss <?. Mackenzie has resigned from the Kaimamaku school.
Repairs are being effected to the footpaths of Cameron and Walton Streets, where the ruts and hollows are being filled with a mixture of tar and sand.
Mr F. Mander, M.P., intends to cover •ill the ground made by Dr. Findlay on his recent totfr, and the member for Marsden will speak at Hikurangi on Thursday, March 2nd, and at Waipu on Saturday, March 4th.
No fewer than 671 applications, front .all parts of the Dominion, have been put in for Run 47, Otoko S.D., near Gisborne. The examination of the applications is proceeding to-day, and the ballot will take place to-morrow. .
At their last meeting the Borough - Council after some discussion on the subject, sanctioned the • extension of the wood and iron verandah of Messrs Heath and Morrison's premises to emrrace Mr Garton's land office. Work twas commenced on the erection of • the extension to-day.
Attention of the burgesses of Whangarei is drawn to an advertisement appearing in to-day's issue, wherein it it notified that a poll will be taken in the Theatre Royal on the 10th of March, in connection with the loan oroposals. Mr F. W. Tothill is the Returning Officer.
The Whangarei Meat Supply Coy. s Ltd., have launched out into a fresb enterprise and have secured the services of a first class and widely experienced small goods man. The firm will make a specialty of such dainties and have secured premises, to be opened in the near future, where a special retail shop will be fitted up.
Owing to the increased business and consequent lack of space at the Farmers' Union premises, it has been decided to close the Bank-street entrance to the Horse Bazaar and to build a seed store in its place, the work being now in the hands of the carpenters. In future the entrance to the .stalls and bazaar will he by way o! the side entrance, opening into Rust's Lane.
An event always fraught with much concern is the launching of a young vocal aspirant upon the troubled sea of a musical career. In the case of Miss Kitty Campion, who is a lady living in the Auckland province, the interest is intensified. Miss Campion is commencing under favorable auspices, with the encouragement of Madame Calves highly favorable opinion. There is always a strenuous si niggle ahead for those adventuring the highest regions of vocal music, and protracted battling before preeminence is attained. Sympathetic support is asked of Whangarei in furthering Miss Campion's ambitions, and the greater-the' aid given the more will Whangarei be able to take pride to itself, when Miss Campion has won her way through, in having been amongst the first to champion her cause. To-night's attendance at the Theatre Royal should he commensurate with the momentousness of the occasion.
